The "All American Drummer" by Charles Wilcoxon is a famous book of "Rudimental" based snare drum solos that have been popular and inspirational since its publication in 1945. Testimony to its timelessness is the fact that great Jazz players like Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Kenny Washington etc etc etc. have all studied from it, and their students as well. You can hear Wilcoxon in players from 1945 to 2019! TD takes each solo in the book (there are 150) and explains and plays it at various tempo. This is a perfect opportunity to play along and feel the inner logic of the rudiments and also to learn form and phrasing. Because we try to go beyond the printed page here at TD we also offer some interesting interpretations of the solos and even offer some rhythmic adventures which perhaps Wilcoxon himself didn’t even think about.
