INTERPRETIVE COORDINATION: SUBSTITUTIONS
All the “interpretive” video sections deal with the famous pages 38 thru 44 in the Syncopation book. This section features “substitution” coordination which is when a particular pattern is temporarily interrupted by a bass drum (for example) and then the pattern is resumed. This is a common solo and groove device. It is similar to “linear” coordination but the mindset is a little different, what with certain particular patterns being the basis of the inspiration. You will find lots of different flows and ideas within the videos and the ever fertile Syncopation book.
